Origins in Haitian Folklore
The word “zombie” may have first been heard in Vodou or Voodoo traditions from Haitian folklore. According to it, a zombie is a dead person brought back to life to serve as a complete slave. This is done by a bokor which is a kind of priest or sorcerer. But this belief is more about being a servant than about the end of the world.
Introduction to Western Pop Culture
A writer named William Seabrook wrote “The Magic Island” in 1929. Through the book, Western readers discovered zombies and what Haitians know about the undead. And the book became the basis for the well-known zombie movie “White Zombie” (1932).
The Modern Zombie Era - Night of the Living Dead (1968)
George A. Romero’s movie “Night of the Living Dead” came next and turned the slave zombies into the zombie fiction we know today – sluggish and hungry for human flesh. From then on, it became a popular culture in the world.
Zombie Apocalypse Becomes a Genre
After the last zombie film became famous, more literature about zombies has been released. They released films like World War Z (2013) and 28 Days Later (2002). They also made comic books like The Walking Dead (2003) and 1978’s Dawn of the Dead. And in 2023 alone, there were approximately 20-30 zombie-themed films released.
The Symbolism of Zombies
As time went by, any person would use the zombie scenario as an expression for pandemics, disasters and other similar emergencies in real life. The zombie plague would represent a future that shows how humans can be overcome by their own weaknesses.
Zombie Apocalypse in Pop Culture
Of course the twenty-first century has also created some of the greatest zombie outbreak movies. Video games like “Resident Evil” and “The Last of Us”. Rick Grimes from “The Walking Dead” TV series is one very popular fictional character. Many zombie war stories always give people the thrill of survival, action and horror.
And it never ends! Somehow, the human corpse concept has made people so interested that thoughts about zombies and the end of the world keep growing. The zombie survival idea is combined with concerns in our society like disease control and natural disasters.
I guess anything supernatural is generally exciting: from zombie virus to ghosts. But it got me thinking. What if the undead would really appear and attack humans? What is the emergency plan? Can an emergency kit be made ready? How can we protect ourselves?
